Smart TV VPN Setup Guide

A VPN can improve streaming on your Smart TV. Here is how to set one up.

Smart TV VPN Setup Guide

Do you need a VPN on your Smart TV?

A VPN is not required but can help if your ISP throttles streaming or you experience buffering. Not all Smart TVs support VPN apps directly.

Android TV VPN setup

Android TV and Google TV support VPN apps from the Play Store. Install ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, or IPVanish. Connect to a server, then open your streaming app.

Samsung and LG VPN setup

Samsung and LG TVs do not support VPN apps directly. You can: (1) install a VPN on your router, (2) share a VPN connection from your computer via hotspot, or (3) use an external device that supports VPNs.

Router VPN setup

Installing a VPN on your router covers all devices on your network, including Smart TVs. Not all routers support VPNs. Check your router's documentation.

VPN and streaming performance

A VPN may slow your connection slightly. Test with and without VPN. If a VPN fixes buffering, your ISP is likely throttling streaming traffic.
