Smart TV advantages

No extra device needed. One remote. Uses your TV's built-in hardware. Simpler setup.

Smart TV disadvantages

Limited app selection (especially Samsung, LG, Roku). Slower processors than dedicated streaming devices. TV manufacturers stop updating apps after a few years.

Firestick advantages

Supports all major streaming apps via sideloading. Faster processor. Regular updates from Amazon. Portable — move it between TVs. Alexa voice control.

Firestick disadvantages

Extra device and remote. Takes an HDMI port. Needs a power outlet nearby. Another thing to set up.

Recommendation

If you have an Android TV or Google TV, the built-in apps are probably fine. If you have Samsung, LG, Roku, or Vizio, a Firestick 4K Max is a significant upgrade for streaming.
